What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a therapy that helps your brain heal from the emotional impact of difficult experiences. We often compare it to walking into a messy closet or opening a disorganized computer—EMDR helps your brain sort through the chaos and put things back in order.
At its core, EMDR works to shift negative beliefs, like “I’m unworthy” or “It’s my fault,” into healthier ones, such as “I am lovable” or “This doesn’t define me.” While it doesn’t change the past, it helps you feel more at peace and takes away the emotional “charge” those experiences once had.
How it works
We recognize that starting something new or unfamiliar can feel a bit daunting, but we’ll guide you through each step.
Our approach is collaborative because we know that while we’re trained therapists, you are the expert on your own experiences. You’ll be the one to direct where we go, and we’ll be there to walk with you down the path toward greater confidence, understanding, and healing in a way that feels safe and supportive.
During EMDR, we use techniques like guided eye movements to help your brain reorganize those stuck experiences. As we begin the work, things in your life may start to feel more organized and less stressful. Over time, you’ll notice that your reactions shift from intense feelings to a calmer, more neutral response.
EMDR is different from traditional talk therapy in that it creates lasting change in a shorter amount of time. It helps you make sense of those experiences and shift your perspective on them, so you can move forward with more ease. And don’t worry—we’ll be with you every step of the way, making sure you feel safe, supported, and empowered throughout the process.
Before & after EMDR
Feeling stuck in the past
Finally able to move forward
When old memories keep resurfacing, it can be like you’re living in the past. Through reprocessing those events, you can let go of what’s holding you back and feel free to move forward.
Constantly on edge
Feeling calm and safe in your own skin
If you’re always feeling jumpy or on high alert, EMDR can help you reduce those reactions and find a sense of calm.
Carrying emotional weight
Letting go of what no longer serves you
The emotional burden of past events can feel overwhelming. With the right tools, you can release that heaviness and feel lighter, more present, and more at peace.
Believing the worst about yourself
Rewriting the story
Negative beliefs about ourselves can become deeply ingrained, impacting how we think, feel, and act. By reworking those beliefs, you can start seeing yourself in a more positive, empowering light and begin responding differently.
Reliving the past
Finding peace in the present
When the past keeps playing on repeat, it’s hard to focus on today. Working through those memories helps you let them go, so you can finally feel at peace and live in the moment.

FAQs
-
No, EMDR is not the same as hypnosis. While both help process emotions, EMDR uses eye movements to reframe traumatic memories, while hypnosis involves relaxation to focus on suggestions or behavior change. Both are effective, but they use different techniques.
-
Not at all. While EMDR is often used for trauma, it’s also helpful for addressing negative self-beliefs, low self-esteem, or unresolved emotions from challenging experiences. Even if your struggles don’t feel like “big traumas,” they’re valid, and EMDR can help you process and heal.
-
Absolutely. EMDR is often helpful for anxiety and depression, especially when they’re tied to unresolved experiences or negative self-beliefs. It works by addressing the root causes of your distress, helping you feel more at peace and confident in your daily life.
